Hair loss is such a common talk nowadays. Everyone is worried about hair falling out and balding. While various factors play a major role in this, it is important to assume that hair loss causes stress, it is largely due to our lifestyle choices which are poor and detrimental to our health: both physical and mental health.

Hair fall, which was once considered to be an age-related natural process or due to the presence of some medical illness, has now come to be the manifestation of our lifestyle choices. This explains the reason why hair loss causes stress has become increasingly prevalent, like an epidemic, especially since the last decade.

Stress is defined as an unpleasant emotional state. It is characterized by a physical and psychological strain that is experienced when frustrated, nervous or angry. We shall not be discussing stress due to a medical condition or stress involved in the act of service and helping others put of free will.

Nowadays various environmental factors generate stress. In fact, it is not wrong to say that the lifestyle adopted by the general population is one that induces stress. Stress has become a common word and everyone is well acquainted with the word and the experience. But why is that so? Our world is a highly competitive place to live in; mankind’s fight for survival is still going on and has not ended, in fact, it appears to have increased.

In today’s world, to be at the top, to be the most powerful, and to accumulate the most resources continues to be the goal of mankind, in general. When mankind sacrifices his sense of peace to retain his rank or excel in this race, he tends to develop stress. But why does man take risks and make sacrifices at the cost of his sense of peace? One can say that this extends to two simple concepts:

1.    How others perceive him/her

2.    How he/she believes that they may perceive him/her

We are all social animals striving for attention; for an audience. Most of the stress that we experience is aimed at preserving and bolstering our image.

So where does hair loss come into all of this? Why does hair loss influence stress? Is hair such a huge issue? This article seeks to explain all these questions, and also how to stop hair loss and avoid stress.

How does stress cause hair loss?

Stress is known to increase hair loss by affecting the hair life cycle. Generally, 10 – 20 percent of our hair is in a state of rest, known as ‘Telogen phase’. During this phase, a portion of hair remains in a state of rest for 2 – 3 months. After that period, hair falls off and new hair grows in its place. The remaining hair is in a continuous state of growth. This process is a natural process. This cycle extends to all the hair cells on our head. The hair fall is temporary and generally not very noticeable.

But when stress is introduced into the equation, research has discovered that stress causes an imbalance in the hair life cycle, resulting in ‘Telogen effluvium’. Telogen effluvium is characterized by increased hair loss due to a large percent of hair going into the Telogen phase and hence hair loss becomes easily noticeable.

 In chronic cases, the hair loss may extend until even more than 6 months. But fear not as even such hair loss is temporary and can be treated. But the key focus should not only be on treating the hair loss but equally in its prevention.

It is important to understand that a large portion of this stress is based on:

1.    How others perceive us

2.    How we believe that others would perceive us

As social animals, we are striving for acceptance, attention, and dominance. Religion and culture have placed great importance on hair since ancient times. This largely influences how we perceive our hair. In some cultures and religions, to cut hair is an act of blasphemy. Some dictate that males should generally have very less hair and that having long hair is a feminine characteristic.

Others promote baldness. Some cultures view having less hair as of being old or ill. Many consider hair to influence sexual appeal. For many, having hair (especially in a particular style) bolsters their self-esteem. For many females, hair is a constituent of their self-esteem. The importance of hair varies largely from culture to culture and from religion to religion.

So one can only imagine the devastation that one would experience when they experience hair loss. For many who rely on their hair to be a source of self-confidence, hair fall is their worst nightmare. It places huge stress on that individual, making them anxious and demotivated. Their greatest focus would be on trying to regrow their hair and till then they remain in a state of stress.

People become desperate and invest a lot of money on immediate treatment. But one should remember that hair fall did not take place overnight, it is a gradual process. Similarly, hair growth is a slow and gradual process.

How to grow hair and reduce stress?

There are 2 approaches to solving this problem.

One is to promote hair growth via various natural remedies. The other would be to work on reducing stress.
